LeminLimez says upcoming hack could enable custom CarPlay wallpapers without a jailbreak

In a post shared to social media platform 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) on Monday Nugget and Pocket Poster lead developer LeminLimez said that it would be possible to apply custom CarPlay wallpapers with Pocket Poster.
While implementing this hack would require a separate app hash, as well as being somewhat tedious to apply, it does work. This is a feature that has long been available on jailbroken platforms, but since Pocket Poster doesn’t require a jailbreak, there’s a lot of potential for people without jailbreaks to enjoy a fun customization using this method.
LeminLimez explained further in the Cowabunga Discord server that this feature would unfortunately only support still images and not animated or video wallpapers. Nevertheless, the fact that this is even possible without a jailbreak is mind-blowing.
It requires editing caches, which Nugget cannot do. Since it is in an app container, Pocket Poster can edit it but needs the caches to be reset beforehand. The way I am clearing the caches also resets collections, and resetting collections also resets the CarPlay wallpaper.
It also differs by iOS version for the wallpaper names, so support for all versions might be spotty.
Also, it can only be an image, not a video.
As for what versions of iOS this would support, that remains to be seen. In a follow-up comment, LeminLimez said that different iOS versions use different wallpaper names, so support for all versions could be “spotty,” as it’s challenging to determine how these wallpapers are named for each version. Only time will tell, however.
If LeminLimez moves forward with releasing this as a public feature in the future, we’ll be the first to let you know. After all, the iDownloadBlog team loves and appreciates hacks such as this.
