The official Apple Support app for the iPhone and iPad could gain an AI-powered support chatbot to resolve some customers’ queries without human agents.

MacRumors reports that Apple is developing an AI-based “Support Assistant” for its dedicated Support app, based on code strings found in the software. The support chatbot “uses generative models,” but it’s unclear whether Apple would use in-house models or turn to an external partner, like OpenAI or Anthropic, for the feature.

A ChatGPT-style chatbot makes a lot of sense for a support app. The official Apple Support app doesn’t provide any AI agents. However, it does use artificial intelligence for its live chat feature to gather initial information and answer basic questions before connecting you to a human.

One way an AI-powered assistant feature could help improve the Support app is by cutting down wait times. And if chatbot functionality within the app will permit people to ask questions about Apple products, payment methods and more, the better.

Apple has tons of product documentation available in every language on its support website. The compny could use this information to train the support chatbot so that it could answer any conceivable technical questions about Apple products, and automatically link to relevant documentation.

A capable chatbot may resolve simpler customer issues, such as warranty inquiries, without engaging humans. We’re not fans of companies shoving AI down our throats, but support services are among the best use cases for AI. The Apple Support app would greatly benefit from a ChatGPT-style assistant regardles of your feelings about AI.
